Film: And Your Name Is?
Vandals are desecrating a Jewish cemetery in Montreal. Enter Fayud, a young law student from Saudi Arabia. Blessed with a strong sense of decency, Fayud tries to intervene and is beaten unconscious.
Waking up in a hospital bed, Fayud sees the blurry image of what can only be a dream. Standing over him is the warm, smiling face of a fully bearded Rabbi. As Fayud’s vision comes into focus, the strange reality hits home when the Rabbi asks, “How are you feeling, my friend?”
Years later in a Saudi village, Yasmeen trudges home in the oppressive heat. Visibly pregnant, she is confronted by her abusive husband, who issues a stunning ultimatum: “If the child is a girl, I want you to eliminate it!”
Back in Montreal, a young Chassidishe couple, Avraham and Gittel, are struggling to have a child. Visits to medical specialists and heartfelt prayers on Shabbat have failed to yield the results, which they so desperately desire. Little did anyone know that a chance meeting between their Rebbe and the young Arab law student so many years ago would prove so fortuitous today.
In the Talmud it is written:
If you save a life it is as if you have saved the world.
Inspired by true events, “AND YOUR NAME IS…” is a story about divine providence. How people from radically different cultures must ultimately put their faith in each other, in ethical values and above all, the gift of life.
